2006 Hunting Stories and Pictures

Overall, 2006 was a successful hunting season for many who visited the SmokyHillsCabin and hunted in North Central Kansas. The 2006 pheasant season was hit and miss. We saw alot of pheasants at dusk on the side of the road or out in fields of winter wheat unattainable.  Some of our favorite and most succesful hunting sites were either converted to game preserves or zero balance on birds this year. The drought hurt this years hatch and skittish birds made hunting difficult for most. 75% of the hunters who rented the cabin this year got birds but the numbers were way down from previous years. Hunting conidtions did get alot better in late December and January when snow fell and the abundance of winter moisture gives us all hope of a quick recovery back to abundant pheasant numbers of recent years.

Turkeys hunters faired the best this year. There are generous amounts of turkey on private and public land for all to hunt. Our first spring hunters bagged 3 turkeys in 3 days and our first fall family turkey hunt found Dad calling in over 100 turkys all from his blind side.
